Investigation of insulin resistance in narcoleptic patients: dependent or independent of body mass index?

2011

Narcoleptic patients have been reported to suffer from an excess morbidity of Type 2 diabetes, even after correction for their often elevated body mass index. Methods: To explore whether narcolepsy is specifically associated with a propensity …

Melanin type and concentration determination using inverse model

2011

Abnormality of melanin production causes skin pigmentation disorders. Currently, assessment of treatment efficacy (under Physician's Global Assessment framework) only refers to visual conditions of skin surface and not the condition of the underlying skin layers and pigments. Albeit researches on models and simulations of light interaction with human skin have been reported, none has been specifically developed for pigmentation analysis of melanin types - eumelanin and pheomelanin. Therefore, our research objectives are to develop image analysis of skin pigmentation for classification and quantification of eumelanin and pheomelanin pigment types in human skin. In this research, the model is…

Quantitative Runge Approximation and Inverse Problems

2017

In this short note we provide a quantitative version of the classical Runge approximation property for second order elliptic operators. This relies on quantitative unique continuation results and duality arguments. We show that these estimates are essentially optimal. As a model application we provide a new proof of the result from \cite{F07}, \cite{AK12} on stability for the Calder\'on problem with local data.

Sequential and joint hydrogeophysical inversion using a field-scale groundwater model with ERT and TDEM data

2013

Abstract. Increasingly, ground-based and airborne geophysical datasets are used to inform groundwater models. Recent research focuses on establishing coupling relationships between geophysical and groundwater parameters. To fully exploit such information, this paper presents and compares a joint hydrogeophysical inversion (JHI) approach and sequential hydrogeophysical inversion (SHI) approach to inform a field-scale groundwater model with Time Domain Electromagnetic (TDEM) and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) data. The implemented SHI coupled inverted geophysical models with groundwater parameters, where the strength of the coupling was based on geophysical parameter resolution. To t…

Effectuation Logic in Digital Business Model Transformation : Insights from Japanese High-Tech Innovators

2019

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study how digital business models evolve when entrepreneurs move to new digital platforms and how this evolution is related to effectuation and causation logics. Design/methodology/approach This study applies a multiple case study approach to investigate how digital business models change in small, Japanese high-tech firms providing their innovations through different digital platforms. To investigate digital business models, this study considers the elements that comprise general business models. The case firms were selected based on size, products and transitions from physical to various digital platforms. Semi-structured interviews were conducted …

Thinking about industry decline : A qualitative meta-analysis and future research directions

2018

We analyze historical and longitudinal research focusing on industry decline. Our analysis suggests that the literature’s general reliance on a few meta-theoretical arguments has important consequences for how decline is framed and explained. We identify four meta-theoretical clusters in the literature: politics and market dynamics are seen as exogenous factors with deterministic features, whereas technology and management capabilities are framed as firm-internal failures with causally questionable explanations of how firm-level characteristics explain industry-level decline. We propose that it is important to understand the limitations of distinct meta-theoretical arguments for an enhanced…

Investing in strategic development : Management control of business model and managerial innovations

2018

Purpose This paper aims to explore management control in the strategic development of business model and managerial innovations. The issue is approached from the perspective of managerial work, aiming to outline what managers consider as essential elements of management control in these often iterative and learning-intensive developmental activities. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on the views of 20 managers engaged in strategic development and its control in various organisations. The interview data consist of the respondents’ experiences and project cases involving non-technological innovations. Qualitative content analysis is used to identify three key concepts of manage…

On a Robin (p,q)-equation with a logistic reaction

2019

We consider a nonlinear nonhomogeneous Robin equation driven by the sum of a \(p\)-Laplacian and of a \(q\)-Laplacian (\((p,q)\)-equation) plus an indefinite potential term and a parametric reaction of logistic type (superdiffusive case). We prove a bifurcation-type result describing the changes in the set of positive solutions as the parameter \(\lambda \gt 0\) varies. Also, we show that for every admissible parameter \(\lambda \gt 0\), the problem admits a smallest positive solution.

Filozofia jako ćwiczenie duchowe. Coachingowy model uprawiania filozofii

2018

W trzecim paragrafie pokazuję, w jaki sposób Wiktor Frankl nawiązuje do coachingowej tradycji uprawiania filozofii w swojej praktyce terapeutycznej. W czwartym przedstawiam przykłady zastosowania modelu coachingowego w dydaktyce filozofii.
